Building in Public as a Mom — What Nobody Tells You

Building in public is one of the most terrifying things I have ever done.

I don’t say that for drama. I say it because if you’re thinking about doing it — sharing your journey, your numbers, your process in real time — you deserve to know what you’re signing up for. And why it’s absolutely worth it anyway.

What nobody tells you about building in public

Nobody tells you how exposed it feels. Sharing your starting numbers — especially when they’re small — feels embarrassing in a way that’s hard to explain until you’ve done it. There’s a vulnerability to saying “I started with 18 followers and here’s exactly what happened” that requires a level of courage most people don’t talk about.

Nobody tells you about the silence at first. You share something vulnerable and real and sometimes nobody responds. The crickets are loud. You wonder if you’re doing it wrong or if anyone even cares.

Nobody tells you that the silence is not a no. It’s just early. Every person who eventually rides with you had to find you first — and they can’t find what you never post. The quiet part is where most people quit. It’s also the part that separates the women who talk about starting from the women who actually build.

Nobody tells you how much it builds your credibility. Once people realize you’re not performing — that you’re actually showing them the real process, not a highlight reel — they trust you in a way that takes years to build through polished content. Real is magnetic.

Nobody tells you how much it keeps you accountable. When your audience knows your goals, you show up differently. You don’t quit as easily. You push through the hard days because people are watching and you don’t want to let them down — or yourself.

Why moms are uniquely positioned to build in public

We are already used to being seen in our most imperfect moments. We have been peed on, spit up on, cried at, screamed at, and loved fiercely all in the same afternoon. We know how to show up real because motherhood doesn’t let you be anything else.

That authenticity is exactly what audiences are hungry for right now. And you already have it. You’re not starting from zero — you’re starting from real, and real is the one thing that can’t be faked or bought.

How to actually start (without waiting until you feel ready)

Here’s the trap: you think you need a plan, a logo, the perfect camera, and your whole niche figured out before you can post. You don’t. You need to hit record and tell the truth about where you are today.

Start by documenting, not performing. Share one thing you learned this week. Share the number that scares you. Share the win nobody clapped for. You don’t have to be the expert — you have to be a few steps ahead of the person watching, and honest about the steps you’re still figuring out yourself.

You will feel behind. Post anyway. Feeling behind and being behind are not the same thing, and the only way from behind to paid is through — one imperfect post at a time.

If you want to build an audience that trusts you, an income that compounds, and a community that actually shows up for you — yes. Build in public. Share the journey. Let people come with you.
